The history of Atypical Depression Disorder
Atypical depression is a subtype of major depression. It was first identified in the 1950s by psychiatrist Dr. Gerald Kieman and his colleagues.
What it Is
Atypical depression is a type of depression where people might feel really down, but their mood can improve when something good happens. They might also eat more, sleep more, feel heavy in their arms or legs, and get really sensitive to feeling rejected. It’s called “atypical” because it’s a bit different from what we might think of as typical depression, but it’s still a serious condition.
Another Name for it?
Atypical depression is sometimes also referred to as “depression with atypical features.” Lay people might refer to it as “different” or “unusual” depression, highlighting its unique symptoms compared to what is often seen as more typical depression.
Characteristics of the disorder:
Atypical depression is characterized by a few key features:
1. Mood Reactivity: People with atypical depression can feel better when something positive happens, even if they’ve been feeling down.
2. Increased Appetite or Weight Gain: Unlike some forms of depression where appetite decreases, those with atypical depression may eat more and gain weight.
3. Excessive Sleepiness: They may feel very tired and sleep more than usual (hypersomnia).
4. Heavy Feeling in Limbs: Some people with atypical depression describe feeling like their arms and legs are very heavy, known as leaden paralysis.
5. Sensitivity to Rejection: There’s often a heightened sensitivity to criticism or rejection, leading to feelings of being easily hurt or upset in social situations.
