Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Hi welcome to Talking with Donna, I am glad you are able to join me. So, far I have shared the neurodevelopmental disorders, this area has at least seven categories we will be discussing the following in the next coming months, intellectual, communication, autistic spectrum. Attention deficit hyperactivity, specific learning, motor and other neurodevelopmental disorders just to name a few.

I hope this has been helpful to some and informational for others. These are just a few examples of the different forms of this disorder.

It’s important to note that neurodevelopement disorder can vary in severity and presentation from person to person. Additionally, some individuals may experience a combination of these forms or have symptoms that don’t neatly fit into a single category. Proper diagnosis and treatment by a mental health professional are essential for effectively managing all disorders.

Today I will be sharing with you part 1 of this disorder which is autism spectrum disorder or (ASD).

In the next coming months, we will continue in the same vein of mental health information, and I must really be careful as to how I present the information to you. This is not for you to diagnosis, treat or hold your friend’s hostage, it is not meant to make you a professional, it is information that you can generally find on any internet site. Yes, I will continue with this statement it is very important.

I am so thrilled you stayed tuned……Now on with the information.

(*Disclaimer: If you or anyone you know are challenged with mental health challenges, please seek professional mental health services. This information is not for replacement of diagnosing or a substitute for treatment or therapy. This information is for educational purposes only.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that impacts how individuals communicate, behave, and interact with others. It is called a “spectrum” disorder because it encompasses a wide range of symptoms and abilities, which can vary significantly from one person to another.

 Another Name for ASD

Another name for Autism Spectrum Disorder is simply “autism.” Previously, terms like “Asperger’s Syndrome” and “pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS)” were used to describe specific conditions on the spectrum, but these have largely been integrated under the broader ASD diagnosis.

Characteristics of ASD

The characteristics of ASD can vary widely but generally include difficulties with social interactions, such as trouble understanding social cues or maintaining eye contact. Individuals with ASD often engage in repetitive behaviors or routines and may have intense, focused interests in specific topics. Sensory sensitivities are also common, where certain sounds, lights, or textures can be overwhelming. While some people with ASD have significant challenges with learning and daily functioning, others may have exceptional skills in areas like mathematics, music, or art. The key to ASD is its diverse presentation, meaning each person’s experience with autism is unique.

Thank you for continuing to support me. I will be posting more information concerning the many forms and subtypes of this disorders during the coming week at which point we will continue with this mental health challenge. I will start with and follow the same format.
