Cyclothymic Disorder
There is a lot of information with cyclothymic disorder. Today we will look at the following information:
*What Form are we discussing today
* Another name for it (if it has one)
* What it is
* Characteristics of the cyclothymic disorder
What form are we discussing today:
Cyclothymic disorder is classified as a mood disorder. It falls under the category of mood disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Specifically, it is considered a subtype of bipolar disorder spectrum, along with bipolar I and bipolar II disorders.
Another name for it (if it has one):
Cyclothymic disorder is sometimes referred to as “cyclothymia.” The terms are often used interchangeably to describe the same mood disorder characterized by chronic mood swings involving hypomanic and mild depressive symptoms. Both “cyclothymic disorder” and “cyclothymia” are used in the field of psychiatry to identify this specific condition.
What is it?
Cyclothymic disorder, or cyclothymia, is a mood disorder characterized by chronic mood fluctuations that include periods of hypomania and mild depression. Unlike bipolar I or II disorders, the mood swings in cyclothymic disorder are less severe. To meet the criteria, these mood disturbances must persist for at least two years in adults (one year in adolescents) without a symptom-free period longer than two months. While less severe, cyclothymic disorder can still impact daily functioning, and it may increase the risk of developing more severe forms of bipolar disorder over time. Professional evaluation and treatment are important for managing this condition.
Characteristics of Cyclothymic Disorder:
Cyclothymic disorder is characterized by:
1. Chronic Mood Fluctuations: Persistent mood swings involving periods of hypomania (elevated mood, increased energy) and mild depression.
2. Duration:Symptoms must persist for at least two years in adults (one year in adolescents) without a symptom-free period longer than two months.
3. Less Severe Symptoms: The mood disturbances are less severe than those seen in bipolar I or II disorders.
4. Impact on Functioning: Although less intense, these mood fluctuations can still affect daily functioning and quality of life.
5. Risk of Progression: Individuals with cyclothymic disorder may be at an increased risk of developing more severe forms of bipolar disorder over time.
It’s important to note that a professional psychiatric evaluation is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Which we will be discussing in the following post, you might want to stay tuned.
