Skills to Learn with gratitude and Humility

What skill would you like to learn?

Let us first exam the word skill what does it mean? My basic understanding of the word skill is something you are good at doing, an ability or talent that allows you to perform a task or activity effectively. They can be developed and improved through practice and learning.

Now that I have a basic understanding of the word, I can answer the question as a well-informed individual. I have a 1930 picture of my grandparents, aunts’, uncles, and great maternal grandmother sitting around a standup piano. My Grandfather took piano lessons as a child and taught his children to play. As a child, when he came to live with us, the only part of the piano he had left was his metronome (you know the thing musicians use to keep timing and rhythm). My siblings and I would often play with it, the steady sound of the ticking was soothing in a way.

As a young girl my best friend who lived directly across the street had a piano, every Wednesday her mother would give her lesson’s, like clockwork after school she would have to change her clothes do her homework, have a snack, then piano lessons (all in that order).

On one sunny Wednesday after school her mother asks me if I would like to learn to play piano. Boy man heart overflowed with happiness, I ran across the street asked my mom who of course said yes. So, for a year we practiced together. I was grateful and humbled for the opportunity.I never got as good in that year, but I could play the scales. That year my friend and her family moved leaving me devastated for a couple of reasons the first of course was the loss of my best friend second the loss of piano lessons.

Time went on I grew up, life happened, marriage, work, children, grand and great grandchildren and then yes retirement. I had not thought of this until this question. Last year I bought a piano in hopes of learning this skill, playing the piano.

So, to make a long story short…. LOL…I would like to learn how to play the piano and have been learning every Tuesday from 1:30 pm to 2:00pm with a wonderful teacher, she may not be my best friends’ mother, but she has become a dear friend.

New Skill in Progress…. It’s the middle of the week again…. Have a wonderful Wednesday.
